The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted an operational licence to the Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Umuchukwu, Anambra State, paving the way for the commencement of academic activities at the institution.
The operational licence was presented at the NUC headquarters in Abuja by the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, to the university’s founder, Dr. Godwin Maduka, after the institution satisfied the Commission’s requirements for licensing and programme accreditation.
With the approval, the university is expected to begin admissions into three faculties offering 17 accredited academic programmes.
Speaking during the presentation, Professor Ribadu congratulated the institution on meeting the prescribed standards, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to quality assurance and the promotion of globally competitive higher education in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Dr. Godwin Maduka, a United States-based physician and philanthropist, described the university as a major investment in medical education, scientific research and healthcare development.
He said the institution is expected to position Anambra State as a centre for medical training and innovation while creating employment opportunities and expanding access to quality education for young Nigerians.
Dr. Maduka also disclosed that the university would place significant emphasis on African traditional medicine research alongside modern medical sciences, with the aim of advancing healthcare solutions through innovation and scientific inquiry.
Also speaking, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university and former Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone, described the institution as a significant step towards strengthening human capital development, medical education and health research in Nigeria and across Africa.
Professor Esimone revealed that the university has assembled a team of experienced academics, medical professionals and researchers from within and outside Nigeria to deliver world-class teaching, research and innovation.
He expressed confidence that the institution would produce highly skilled healthcare professionals capable of meeting global standards while contributing to the advancement of medical practice and research.
The university also boasts modern teaching and research facilities designed to support cutting-edge medical education and scientific innovation, reinforcing its vision of becoming a leading centre of excellence in healthcare training and research in Africa.
