Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that the 2027 presidential election could be his last attempt at becoming Nigeria’s president, saying he believes it is time for younger Nigerians to take over the country’s leadership.
Obi made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he reflected on his political future and the possibility of bowing out after the next election.
Asked whether 2027 would be his final presidential contest, Obi said the decision would depend on the outcome of the election.
“It depends on who wins,” Obi said.
“But I can tell you, I’m coming to the end of it because I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”
The former Anambra State governor explained that his age was also a major consideration, stressing that the presidency requires enormous energy and capacity.
“I’ll be 68 or 69. So, if you add that to another eight years, I will be 77 or 78. I don’t think I’ll have the energy I have today because that capacity is very important. It’s critical,” he said.
Obi maintained that regardless of the 2027 outcome, Nigeria must begin creating room for younger leaders to emerge.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in the 2019 election before contesting the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
Ahead of the 2027 general election, Obi emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
