Fighting a major wildfire in south-west France is like “David against Goliath”, a fire service spokesman says

The fire in the Gironde region is only nine miles from the outskirts of Bordeaux – but officials say the city is not yet under threat

Firefighters west of the city reported a relatively good night, our correspondent writes, with the fire stabilised – but not under control

Temperatures are expected to reach 39C (102F) this week in south-west France with no rain forecast until at least Friday

The wildfire has burned more than 42,000 hectares in Gironde, with 240 homes destroyed – see drone photos here

“[It] reminds me a little bit like Pompeii,” one resident of Bordeaux tells us. “It was quite difficult to breathe”

There are also major wildfires in Spain, including in the Madrid region – where a heatwave is also coming this week. We have maps of the major blazes here
