Global K-pop sensation BTS has announced that it will not submit its music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, saying it wants its work to be recognised on its artistic merit rather than being categorised by region or language. The decision follows the Recording Academy’s introduction of a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.
The seven-member group made the announcement through a statement shared by its members, explaining that they had collectively decided not to participate in this year’s Grammy submission process.
“We have decided not to submit our music for the Grammy Awards this year. We hope that music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language,” the statement read.
The Recording Academy recently unveiled several new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which is intended to recognise artistic excellence in K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other Asian pop genres.
BTS’ decision has sparked widespread discussion across the music industry and among fans, with many viewing the move as a statement in favour of evaluating music without regional or linguistic distinctions. The group has previously received multiple Grammy nominations but has yet to win the prestigious award.
