The Nigerian Army has announced the appointment of new General Officers Commanding (GOCs) for four newly created divisions as the expanded formations commence operations, following President Bola Tinubu’s approval to increase the Army’s divisions from eight to twelve.
The appointments are part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing restructuring aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness and improving security operations across the country.
Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9 Division in Ilorin. He will also serve as the Commander of Operation SAVANNA SHIELD.
Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife has been named GOC of the 10 Division, Jalingo, while Major General Moses Gara will head the 5 Division in Makurdi and simultaneously serve as Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE. Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has been appointed GOC of the 2 Division in Ibadan.
The Army also announced the activation of three new brigades. Brigadier General A.O. Odubiyi will command the 11 Brigade in Gboko, Brigadier General A.M. Haruna takes charge of the 29 Brigade in Kainji, while Brigadier General R.M. Aminu has been appointed Commander of the 10 Brigade in Lafia.
The newly established 5, 9, 10 and 83 Divisions were approved by President Bola Tinubu as part of efforts to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions, a move aimed at enhancing troop deployment, strengthening command structures and improving the military’s capacity to respond to security challenges across the country.
