President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, as an outstanding soldier whose life was defined by discipline, courage, patriotism and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity.
The President made the remarks at the 60th Memorial Anniversary of the late military leader held at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Abia State.
Represented by the Minister of Defence, Retired General Christopher Musa, President Tinubu said Aguiyi-Ironsi demonstrated exceptional leadership and a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and safeguarding the integrity of the Nigerian state.
He noted that, six decades after his death, Aguiyi-Ironsi remains one of the country’s most revered military figures, adding that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening national unity, democracy, security and sustainable development.
The President also appealed to the Abia State Government to consider constructing a Unity Square in honour of the late Head of State.
In his address, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, thanked President Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former First Lady Dr. Patience Jonathan and other dignitaries for attending the memorial.
Governor Otti described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a detribalised Nigerian who made the ultimate sacrifice for the unity of the country. He disclosed that his administration renamed the dualised Ossah–Abia Tower Road as Aguiyi-Ironsi Boulevard to immortalise the late military leader.
The governor urged public office holders to prioritise service to the people over personal enrichment, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving education, healthcare, arts, culture and other critical sectors.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo recalled serving under Aguiyi-Ironsi during the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo, where the late General became the first African Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force.
He described him as an exceptional military officer whose professionalism, courage and leadership inspired generations of officers in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Also speaking, former First Lady Dr. Patience Jonathan described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a symbol of national unity and urged Nigerians to uphold the ideals of peace and togetherness for which he stood.
She also paid tribute to the late Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi for her resilience in raising her family following the assassination of her husband and commended Governor Otti for his developmental strides across Abia State.
In his remarks, former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd.), described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a distinguished military officer whose legacy of discipline, patriotism and national service continues to inspire the Armed Forces and future generations of Nigerians.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi described the late military leader as a patriotic and detribalised Nigerian whose life remains a shining example of selfless service and commitment to nation-building.
The memorial ceremony attracted senior military officers, heads of paramilitary agencies, government officials, traditional rulers and other prominent Nigerians who gathered to honour the legacy of the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi.
