The Federal Government has announced plans to begin phasing out electricity subsidy payments from 2027.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during a media interactive session where he addressed the growing debt burden in the power sector.
Tegbe said the government would gradually remove the subsidy but assured Nigerians that the process would not strip consumers of the benefits they currently enjoy.
He also moved to calm fears of an imminent increase in electricity bills, insisting that there are no plans to raise tariffs in the immediate future.
The minister made the disclosure while speaking on efforts to address the mounting financial challenges facing the power sector.
Although details of how the subsidy withdrawal will be implemented were not immediately provided, the government maintained that the transition would be carefully managed to protect consumers as reforms in the electricity sector continue.
