Tricycle and motorcycle operators in Anambra State have accused officials at designated centres of inflating the cost of the newly introduced riders’ permit, contrary to the approved government rate.
The operators, under the auspices of the Anambra Keke Drivers Forum (AKDF), made the allegation during their weekly meeting in Awka, calling on the state government to investigate the reported overcharging.
The development follows the July 27, 2026 directive by the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, mandating all tricycle and motorcycle riders including private, commercial, corporate and government operators to obtain a riders’ permit at an approved cost of ₦5,250 from designated centres across the state.
Speaking through the forum’s Secretary, U. Umeh, the operators alleged that officials at some registration centres were demanding between ₦9,000, ₦12,500 and ₦15,000 for the permit, instead of the officially approved fee.
The forum reaffirmed its members’ commitment to complying with the government’s directive but insisted they would only pay the amount announced by the Commissioner for Transport.
Some commercial motorcycle operators, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also condemned the alleged price increase, accusing some officials of exploiting riders for personal gain.
They appealed to the Commissioner for Transport to investigate the allegations, caution the officials involved and ensure that the permit is sold strictly at the approved government rate.
The riders maintained that they remain willing to comply with the policy, provided the registration process is transparent and the approved fee is strictly enforced across all designated centres.
