A lawmaker representing Nnewi Constituency has raised concerns over the rising cost of accommodation around the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Okofia campus, describing rents of between ₦700,000 and ₦1 million for a self-contained room as unacceptable.
The lawmaker made the disclosure on Saturday, August 8, 2026, while receiving the Students’ Government of NAUTH, Okofia, at his constituency office in Nnewi.
According to him, the students informed him that they were now paying between ₦700,000 and ₦1 million annually for single-room self-contained apartments around the Okofia campus.
He expressed concern over the impact of the rent increases on students and their families, particularly amid current economic challenges.
While acknowledging the difficulties facing landlords and residents, the lawmaker said excessive rent increases could undermine existing tenancy regulations in Anambra State.
He said he would draw the attention of the state government to the development and call for relevant ministries, departments and agencies to investigate the situation and take appropriate action.
The lawmaker warned that unchecked increases in accommodation costs could heighten tension within the community and potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order.
He also said he had received concerns from other visitors over growing tension in Nnewi, assuring that he would use his legislative powers to promote peace, unity and brotherhood in the community.
He urged all stakeholders to put aside personal interests and work towards maintaining harmony and stability in Nnewi.
