A 40-year-old woman in Ebonyi State, Blessing Ngwuta, has alleged that she lost her four-month pregnancy following an attack on her family residence in Ezza South Local Government Area by suspected political thugs.
Ngwuta, wife of 73 year old Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, Christopher Ngwuta, said the incident occurred on Thursday while she was preparing food for political guests at their residence in Amaezekwe community.
According to her, the attackers, armed with guns, machetes, swords, sticks and stones, invaded the compound, assaulted occupants and allegedly vandalised vehicles, tricycles and other property before taking away cash, mobile phones and motorcycles.
Ngwuta alleged that she was specifically attacked after one of the assailants discovered that she was in the kitchen.
She claimed that one of the attackers struck her from behind, causing her to fall and hit her abdomen on the ground, while another allegedly pointed a gun at her and threatened her.
The woman said she subsequently began bleeding and was rushed to a hospital, where she claimed she lost the pregnancy and was discharged on Sunday.
Ngwuta, who said she was not a member of any political party, appealed to security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Her husband, Christopher Ngwuta, described the incident as politically motivated and said the attack would not force him to abandon the PDP or his support for the party’s 2027 governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii.
The PDP chieftain alleged that he recognised some of the attackers and expressed concern that people he considered members of his community could have participated in the attack.
The incident comes days after suspected political thugs reportedly disrupted a PDP event in the same Ezza South Local Government Area, where several party supporters and journalists were allegedly assaulted.
The PDP subsequently accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of orchestrating attacks against opposition members and supporters in the state.
However, the Ebonyi State APC Chairman, Stanley Okoro Emegha, denied the allegation, insisting that the party and Governor Francis Nwifuru do not condone political violence.
Emegha urged political supporters to shun violence, saying political opponents could become allies in the future.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ebonyi State Police Command had not announced any arrest in connection with the latest incident or confirmed the circumstances surrounding Ngwuta’s alleged pregnancy loss.
The allegation that the assault directly caused the loss of the pregnancy remains unverified and would require confirmation from relevant medical and investigative authorities.
