The Osun State Police Command has summoned Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, over his controversial “kill Accord” comment that has ignited outrage ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

Fadahunsi was invited to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo on Wednesday, August 12, at 11:00 am, to explain the circumstances surrounding the statement he allegedly made during an APC campaign in Ilesa.

The invitation, contained in a letter dated August 11 and signed by Samuel Etaifo Erale, the Commissioner of Police, Elections, Osun State, followed the circulation of a video of the senator’s remarks on social media.

“The invitation is premised on information in possession of the Nigeria Police alleging that during your address at the aforementioned programme, you made statements considered to be threatening, inciting and intimidating in nature, and the statement has already been in circulation on various electronic and social media platforms,” the document reads.

The controversy started after a video shared on X showed Fadahunsi addressing APC supporters in Yoruba and allegedly instructing them to attack members of the rival Accord Party.

“From now on, whenever you see Accord members, kill them. I authorise you to kill them. They have wives and children too,” Fadahunsi had said.

The remarks triggered a wave of condemnation, particularly as the state heads towards a fiercely contested governorship election.

However, following the backlash, the senator’s media team moved to clarify his statement, insisting that he was referring to defeating the Accord Party through the ballot box rather than physical violence.

His team said his viral comment was “a call on supporters to overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful and democratic means during the August 15 governorship election”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Senator’s statement was purely political and metaphorical,” his team said in a statement titled “Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence”.

The clarification came amid heightened political tensions in Osun, where incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party.

Adeleke has repeatedly accused the APC of using thugs to attack and kill his supporters, allegations the party has disputed.

With the election only days away, the police invitation to Fadahunsi has added another twist to an already heated political contest in the state.
