Enugu Air has been admitted into the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), strengthening the airline’s position in Nigeria’s aviation sector and expanding the association’s presence in the country’s growing domestic air travel market.
The airline, which is headquartered in Enugu and operates from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, commenced commercial operations on July 7, 2025.
Enugu Air currently operates flights to six domestic destinations, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Benin City, with plans to expand its network to more Nigerian cities before commencing regional and international operations.
The airline operates a fleet of Embraer E170, E190 and E195 aircraft.
Welcoming Enugu Air into the association, AFRAA Secretary-General, Abdérahmane Berthé, described the airline as an important example of homegrown investment capable of strengthening air connectivity across Africa.
“We are delighted to welcome Enugu Air into the AFRAA fraternity,” Berthé said.
He said AFRAA would support the airline in areas including the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification process, while expressing optimism about its continued growth.
Berthé added that Enugu Air’s membership would contribute to the association’s efforts to promote stronger cooperation among African airlines and advance the vision of a unified African aviation market.
The admission comes as Nigeria continues to play a significant role in the development of Africa’s aviation industry, given its large population and expanding domestic travel market.
AFRAA said Enugu Air’s membership aligns with its strategic objective of strengthening the collective voice of African airlines and promoting safer, more efficient and sustainable air connectivity across the continent.
With the admission of Enugu Air, AFRAA now has 50 member airlines, collectively representing more than 85 per cent of international traffic carried by African airlines.
Enugu Air is expected to use its membership of the continental association to deepen industry partnerships and support its planned expansion into regional and international markets.
