The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University branch (ASUU-ABSU), has suspended its ongoing industrial action and directed members to return to work with immediate effect.
The decision was reached during the union’s congress meeting on Friday, August 28, 2026, where members reviewed developments surrounding the issues that triggered the strike.
However, while suspending the strike, the union issued a fresh ultimatum to the university management over the continued suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze.
ASUU-ABSU gave the management until Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Nwaeze and lift his suspension, warning that failure to meet the deadline could trigger a return to industrial action.
In a statement signed by the Branch Chairperson, Dr Chidi S. Mba, and Secretary, Dr Victor U. Obisike, the union urged its members to remain united as efforts continue to resolve the outstanding issues.
The branch leadership also commended members for their “unity, resilience, commitment and support” throughout the period of the industrial action.
The statement read:
“We are giving the university management up to Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension.
“The failure by management to comply within this stipulated period would leave us with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.
“We urge our members to remain united and committed to the ideals of our union as we continue to pursue the resolution of outstanding issues affecting us.
“Your steadfastness and collective resolve have been invaluable to the progress recorded.”
The union further reminded members that only the branch chairperson is authorised to speak officially on behalf of ASUU-ABSU.
It advised members who require clarification on the development to contact the branch chairperson directly.
