The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the death of two persons following separate gunshot attacks in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The Command said the victims were allegedly shot at separate locations by unidentified gunmen, who were reportedly travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla.
According to the Police, the attacks occurred along Capital City Road in Amaenyi and S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo, Awka.
Following a distress call, police operatives were immediately deployed to the affected areas, where they recovered the bodies of the victims and took them to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The Police said one of the victims is yet to be identified, while the second has been identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”
Operatives also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.
Condemning the killings, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, described the incidents as unacceptable and a direct threat to the peace and security of the state.
The CP has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Command said it has also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring areas in a bid to track down the perpetrators.
The Police appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the attacks or possess credible information about the suspects or the vehicle used in the operation to come forward.
The Command assured members of the public that information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
The Anambra State Police Command further urged residents to strengthen cooperation with security agencies by providing timely information that could assist in apprehending the suspects and preventing further attacks.
