The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged young people across Africa to take the lead in preserving and promoting their cultural heritage, particularly the Hausa language, as a means of strengthening identity and fostering unity across communities.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, in Abuja on Monday, Barau made the call on Sunday in Accra, Ghana, where he attended the 2026 World Hausa Day celebration as the Guest of Honour.
The statement noted that he was accompanied to the event by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army and Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Abdulazeez Yar’Adua; Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Muntari Dandutse; and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Lawal Adamu Usman.
The event, organised by Hausa Youth Ghana, was held at the Forecourt of the State House in the Ghanaian capital.
Batau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said the celebration provided an important platform for promoting the Hausa language, culture and identity while strengthening friendship and mutual understanding among communities across West Africa.
“I commend the organisers for sustaining efforts to preserve and promote Hausa cultural heritage. The initiative is a contribution to strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Ghana. Ghana and Nigeria share a long history of interaction in trade, education, migration, culture and diplomacy.
“The Hausa community in Ghana has also continued to make meaningful contributions to the social and economic development of the country while preserving its cultural heritage,” he said.
