Imo State has emerged as the fourth-largest state economy in Nigeria, according to data published by civic organisation BudgIT.
The state, under Governor Hope Uzodimma, recorded a Gross Domestic Product, GDP, of ₦7.68 trillion during the period under review, placing it behind Lagos, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.
According to the figures, Lagos ranked first with a GDP of ₦41.17 trillion, followed by Rivers with ₦7.9 trillion and Akwa Ibom with ₦7.77 trillion.
Imo’s ₦7.68 trillion GDP placed it ahead of Delta State, another major oil-producing state, which recorded ₦6.19 trillion.
Anambra State ranked sixth with ₦5.14 trillion, while the remaining 30 states recorded lower GDP figures.
BudgIT noted that economic output varies significantly across Nigerian states, with commerce, industry and natural resources serving as major drivers of state economies.
The organisation attributed Lagos’ economic strength largely to its position as Nigeria’s commercial and financial hub, while Rivers and Akwa Ibom benefit significantly from their oil, gas and petroleum-related activities.
For Imo State, the government has increasingly highlighted diversification and investment attraction as key components of its economic strategy.
The state is also known for significant natural gas resources, which the government says provide opportunities for further industrial and economic development.
As part of efforts to attract investors, Governor Hope Uzodimma recently convened the first Imo Economic Summit, bringing together business leaders and investors to explore investment opportunities across the state.
The state government has also reported increased investment activities in sectors including banking and oil and gas over the past two years.
The latest ranking is expected to further draw attention to Imo State’s economic performance and its ongoing efforts to attract investment and diversify its revenue base.
