The Nigerian Navy Naval Outpost, Onitsha, has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for further investigation.

The suspected illicit substances were recovered at Atani Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State during a routine patrol by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Amiyi.

The Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost Onitsha, Commander Kabir Yusuf, disclosed this while addressing journalists.

According to him, the naval patrol team spotted a vehicle suspected to be conveying Cannabis Sativa and immediately gave chase.

He said the suspect allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene when security operatives closed in.

Commander Yusuf said a follow-up operation subsequently led the personnel to a warehouse allegedly being used by the suspect to store illicit substances.

A thorough search of the facility reportedly resulted in the recovery of 19 bags of suspected Cannabis Sativa.

The Naval Outpost subsequently handed over the recovered substances to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit for further investigation and necessary action.

The Navy also requested the NDLEA to provide the outcome of its investigation upon completion.

The development forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the circulation and abuse of illicit drugs and other substances across Anambra State.
