An Indian influencer reportedly died nearly two months after she was allegedly assaulted and set on fire by two acquaintances.
Manjeet Kaur, who had 146,000 Instagram followers, died while receiving treatment at the government hospital, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, in Chandigarh on Aug. 26, reported local outlets Tribune India, The Hindu and The Indian Express.
The 28-year-old’s mother allegedly claimed in a complaint to police that, on July 3, Kaur had been abducted by two acquaintances, assaulted, tied to a tree and set on fire, the outlets reported. While receiving care at a local hospital, Kaur reportedly regained consciousness on Aug. 5, per The Hindu, though she died three weeks later.
The hospital spokesperson told The Indian Express that Kaur had been treated in the Burns ICU and described her injuries as 40 to 45% burns sustained in a petroleum gas cylinder leak.
An investigation has been launched into her death per The Hindu and the Indian Express. Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed to the Tribune India that “a case of kidnapping and murder has been registered after receiving the deceased’s mother’s complaint.”
The Indian Express also reported that Kaur was seven weeks pregnant when she died, citing an autopsy report released by local authorities.
