The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State has called on Governor Francis Nwifuru to retract his recent remarks against opposition parties, apologise to the people of the state or resign from office.
The PDP described the Governor’s comments as inflammatory and capable of heightening political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi State, Darlington Peter-Onwe, made the demand during a live radio programme on Friday.
Peter-Onwe accused the Governor of making statements that could encourage hostility against opposition members and media practitioners, arguing that the primary responsibility of government is to protect lives and property.
The PDP’s reaction followed comments made by Nwifuru during the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies in Abakaliki.
The Governor had dismissed allegations of harassment and intimidation by APC supporters and warned the opposition that they would “see real threats at the right time.”
He also directed the newly sworn-in council chairmen to ensure the All Progressives Congress wins their respective local government areas in the 2027 elections.
Nwifuru further warned that chairmen who failed to deliver their councils could be removed from office, while directing them to deal “mercilessly” with anyone who attempts to disrupt APC dominance at the grassroots.
Reacting, the PDP spokesman urged the Governor to take responsibility for the remarks, insisting that political leaders should promote peace and protect the rights of all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
Peter-Onwe also cited Governor Alex Otti of Abia State as an example of leadership accountability, saying public apologies demonstrate strength rather than weakness.
The PDP warned that continued inflammatory rhetoric could escalate political tension in Ebonyi State and called on relevant authorities to pay attention to the development.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Ebonyi State chapter of the APC were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
