The Security Situation Room has called for the arrest and investigation of social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, over comments he allegedly made at the Nigerian Bar Association National Conference.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Douglas Ogbankwa, the group said VDM’s recent apology over the remarks should not prevent relevant authorities from investigating the matter.
The Security Situation Room alleged that VDM, while speaking at the NBA National Conference, accused the Nigerian Army and Police of conniving with kidnappers.
Describing the allegation as reckless and unsubstantiated, the group said such comments could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.
It argued that while citizens have the right to criticise government and security agencies, such freedom should not extend to making defamatory or unverified allegations.
The group further called on relevant security and prosecutorial agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and, if a prosecutable offence is established, arraign VDM before a competent court.
It also urged the authorities to ensure that due process of law is followed, adding that no citizen should be considered above the law regardless of popularity or public influence.
The Security Situation Room maintained that accountability should prevail, insisting that an apology should not automatically bring an end to investigations where an alleged offence may have been committed.
The group called for swift action by the relevant authorities, stressing that the matter should be handled in accordance with the law.
