Tension is mounting at Imo State University, IMSU, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, branch of the institution says its members may refuse to mark or grade examination scripts written by students during the ongoing industrial action.
The Chairman of ASUU IMSU branch, Stephen Oguji, disclosed the union’s position in a statement issued to journalists in Owerri on Saturday.
Oguji warned students currently sitting for examinations that lecturers participating in the strike would not compromise the integrity of the university’s academic process.
According to him, the lecturers responsible for teaching, assessing and grading students are currently on strike, raising concerns over the credibility of examinations being conducted without their involvement.
The ASUU chairman cautioned students against participating in examinations whose results could later become subject to questions over their academic validity.
He said the union’s priority was to ensure that students do not lose their academic session or graduate through a process whose credibility could be challenged.
Oguji urged students to direct their concerns toward resolving the issues responsible for the industrial action rather than blaming lecturers.
He maintained that the responsibility for resolving the dispute rests with government authorities with the capacity to address the issues that led to the strike.
The ASUU IMSU branch chairman appealed to students to support the union’s position and demand the implementation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2025 agreement, particularly commitments relating to university funding.
The development has raised concerns among students as the institution continues to conduct examinations amid the ongoing strike.
