The Anambra State Homeland Security Agency, popularly known as Agunechemba, is set to question two of its operatives and a woman who accused them of alleged misconduct and using her husband’s arrest to evade investigation in Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area.
The woman, Ifeoma Onyemee, alleged that the operatives, identified as Kenneth Obiwulu, popularly known as Udo, and AK Irobi, known as AK, orchestrated the arrest of her husband, Chimobi Onyemee, after he petitioned authorities over alleged misconduct by the duo.
According to Mrs Onyemee, her husband petitioned the Anambra State Commissioner of Police and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, over the alleged activities of the operatives.
She further alleged that following the petition, her husband was arrested and taken to the Rapid Response Squad headquarters in Awkuzu, where he was accused of murdering a man in Uli in 2022.
Mrs Onyemee questioned the timing of the murder allegation, claiming that her husband had not previously been arrested or declared wanted over the alleged incident.
She also made other allegations against the two operatives, including unlawful detention, extortion, extrajudicial killings and destruction of property. The allegations have not been independently established.
Mrs Onyemee appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, security agencies and human rights organisations to intervene, saying she feared for her husband’s safety.
The Officer-in-Charge and Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu, CSP Orebe Chidubem Mathew, confirmed that Chimobi Onyemee was in the squad’s custody but declined to provide further details.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer had not responded to requests for confirmation and reaction to the allegations as of the time of filing the report.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Agunechemba, Nweke Nweke, confirmed that a complaint had been lodged against the two operatives.
Nweke said the interrogation, which was initially scheduled earlier, was postponed because the complainant did not appear when the agency was notified.
He disclosed that the complainant and the two operatives are expected to appear before the agency today, Tuesday, for questioning.
The Agunechemba spokesman also denied the allegation that the agency collected N250,000 to facilitate the investigation or questioning of its operatives.
He challenged the complainant to identify the person who allegedly collected the money.
Agunechemba said it would be in a better position to address the allegations after hearing from both the complainant and the two operatives.
