A keke rider has reportedly been swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State, while attempting to rescue a woman trapped by the rising water during a heavy downpour.

The incident reportedly occurred around Book Foundation, Ifite Awka, following heavy rainfall in the state capital on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the rider was attempting to help the woman when the floodwaters overwhelmed him and swept him away.

His remains were reportedly recovered on Thursday morning around Miracle Junction, near Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The body was subsequently deposited at Ebenebe Mortuary.

The incident has heightened concerns over flooding, drainage and waste management in parts of Awka, with residents and commercial operators expressing concern over the dangers posed by flooding during heavy rainfall.

Following the incident, fellow keke riders, friends and associates of the deceased reportedly took to the streets in protest, calling attention to the flooding situation and the need for urgent action to prevent further loss of lives.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about the need for effective flood control measures, proper waste disposal and improved drainage management in flood-prone areas of the state.
