The Executive Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has pledged increased support for education as part of efforts to promote literacy and improve learning outcomes in the council area.
Anazodo made the commitment on September 8 during the 2026 World Literacy Day celebration organised by the Nnewi North branch of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS.
The event, held at the Nnewi North Local Government Secretariat, featured an awareness campaign, road walk and sensitisation programme aimed at promoting reading, adult literacy and quality education across the council area.
Addressing principals, teachers, students and other education stakeholders, Anazodo described literacy as a foundation for individual development and societal progress.
“Education remains the greatest tool for empowerment. As a government, we will continue to partner with ANCOPSS and other education stakeholders to ensure that every child in Nnewi North has access to quality learning,” he said.
The council chairman commended ANCOPSS, Nnewi North, for organising the campaign, saying initiatives of such nature would help reinforce the importance of education among parents, students and the wider community.
Anazodo also said the council would support school infrastructure, teacher training and literacy programmes as part of measures to strengthen the education sector in Nnewi North.
The ANCOPSS Chairman in Nnewi North, Mr. Nathaniel Aniedo, thanked the council chairman for identifying with the principals and supporting education.
Aniedo said the campaign was designed to encourage reading, writing and lifelong learning, while creating greater awareness of the importance of literacy.
The sensitisation walk passed through major streets in Nnewi, with participants displaying placards bearing messages including “Read to Lead” and “Literacy is Power.”
World Literacy Day is observed annually on September 8 to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies and to promote efforts towards improving access to education and lifelong learning.
