The Federal Government has empowered 100 youths in Onitsha, Anambra State, with electrical equipment and certificates of participation following a five-day intensive training programme on modern electrical installation and maintenance.
The empowerment was organised by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, with the aim of equipping young people with practical skills and the necessary tools to establish sustainable livelihoods.
The presentation ceremony, held at Ime Obi, Onitsha, was attended by the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe; the Member representing Onitsha North One Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Mimi Ikpeazu; the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha-Mba, among other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe described the programme as an opportunity that aligns with broader efforts to develop and empower young people in Onitsha.
The monarch encouraged the beneficiaries to believe in themselves, stressing that hard work remains essential to achieving success.
In an interview, NASENI Research Engineer, Engr. Madagi Udu-Carter, said the programme, which has been implemented over the years, was designed to create a multiplier effect, with beneficiaries expected to transfer the knowledge acquired to other members of their communities.
According to him, the Onitsha beneficiaries were trained in modern techniques of electrical installation and maintenance.
He explained that while some of the beneficiaries were already qualified electricians, they lacked the necessary tools to practise their trade effectively, while others were apprentices who faced difficulties acquiring equipment after completing their training.
Two of the beneficiaries, Michael Agunyego and Josephine Nwati, described the electrical kits as comprehensive, saying they were suitable for both beginners and experienced electricians.
They expressed optimism that the skills acquired and the equipment provided would enable them to improve their livelihoods, become more economically independent and contribute to the development of their communities.
