The ancient Mbaukwu Kingdom in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State came alive on Saturday, September 12, 2026, as the community celebrated its 2026 New Yam Festival, Iri Ji Mbaukwu.
The annual cultural celebration, held at the historic Akabueze Palace, was hosted by the traditional ruler of Mbaukwu, His Royal Majesty Igwe Peter Nwokike Anugwu, JP, OFR, Eze Ukwu Mbaukwu, Eze Ka Eze.
The festival brought together traditional rulers, political leaders, dignitaries, and sons and daughters of the kingdom to celebrate the harvest season, give thanks for a bountiful agricultural year and promote the preservation of Igbo cultural heritage.
Among the distinguished guests was Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, who joined the Mbaukwu people to celebrate the occasion and felicitate with Igwe Anugwu.
Senator Umeh commended the monarch for his leadership, wisdom and commitment to preserving Igbo customs and traditions, while wishing the people of Mbaukwu a prosperous agricultural season, continued peace and development.
The festival also attracted prominent members of the Anambra State traditional institution, including the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty Igwe Chidubem Iweka, Eze Iweka III of Obosi, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Dr Joel Maduabuchie Egwuonwu, Eze Udo II of Umuawulu, alongside other traditional rulers from across the state.
Responding to the goodwill, Igwe Peter Anugwu expressed appreciation to Senator Victor Umeh for honouring the invitation and celebrating with the kingdom.
The monarch commended Senator Umeh for what he described as effective representation of Anambra Central in the National Assembly, particularly his accessibility, visibility and advocacy for the interests of his constituents.
Igwe Anugwu also reaffirmed his continued support and prayers for the senator as he carries out his legislative responsibilities.
The Iri Ji Mbaukwu celebration featured traditional rites, cultural dance performances, the ceremonial cutting of the new yam and displays of traditional hospitality, reflecting the community’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity and values.
The New Yam Festival remains an important cultural occasion among the Igbo, traditionally marking the beginning of a new harvest season and providing an opportunity for communities to celebrate, give thanks and strengthen bonds among their people.
