Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik has made it clear that he does not intend to use the band’s concerts as a platform for political messages, saying fans attend shows to enjoy the music and take a break from everyday pressures.
Rzeznik said he believes people come to concerts to “escape” and have a good time, rather than listen to artists tell them what political views they should hold.
The singer’s comments come as more musicians have increasingly used live performances to address political and social issues, sometimes turning concerts into platforms for commentary on divisive topics.
However, Rzeznik said that is not the approach he wants to take with the Goo Goo Dolls. For him, the stage should primarily be a place where fans can connect through music without feeling pressured to subscribe to a particular political position.
“I don’t want to lecture them,” Rzeznik said, emphasising his preference for keeping politics separate from the band’s live performances.
His position reflects a broader debate in the music industry over whether artists should use their platforms to speak on political issues or allow audiences to simply enjoy the performance without political messaging.
