The Abia State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration and improving public safety following separate courtesy visits by the Federal Fire Service, Abia Command, Zone E, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) Monitoring Committee.
The engagements took place on Tuesday at the Police Command Headquarters in Umuahia.
The Federal Fire Service delegation, led by the State Controller, ACF Juliet Ontendi, visited the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, to formally welcome him and reaffirm the agency’s commitment to continued cooperation with the Police Command.
During the meeting, the delegation emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between both agencies, particularly in preparation for forthcoming elections and in the investigation of suspected arson and other fire-related incidents.
The Fire Service also called for enhanced synergy to ensure effective and coordinated responses to emergencies and security challenges across the state.
Responding, CP Afolabi assured the Federal Fire Service of the Command’s continued support, stressing that unity and effective coordination among security and emergency-response agencies remained essential to protecting lives and property.
The Commissioner noted that stronger collaboration would enhance the agencies’ capacity to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies and other threats to public safety.
In a separate engagement, the Police Command received members of the ACJL Monitoring Committee, led by its Chairman, Hon. Enwereuzo Chinedu, Mayor of Umuahia South Local Council.
The committee briefed the Commissioner on the Child Diversion Programme, which is set to be piloted in Umuahia South.
The initiative is aimed at preventing children between the ages of 10 and 17 who are involved in minor offences from being detained, while providing alternative interventions such as counselling, community service and reintegration.
The programme is being implemented in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2015, with emphasis on rehabilitation rather than detention for children involved in minor offences.
CP Afolabi commended the initiative and expressed the Command’s readiness to collaborate with the committee towards its successful implementation.
He noted that initiatives of this nature would contribute to strengthening community policing, protecting the rights and welfare of children and improving justice delivery across Abia State.
The two engagements highlighted the Police Command’s continued emphasis on inter-agency cooperation as a strategy for improving security, emergency response and justice administration in the state.
