Wike is the field commander, but Tinubu is the Generalissimo who approved the operation. The coalition does not make Wike bigger than the President; it makes the President bigger than his party. Every vote Wike harvests from the South-South with the Rainbow Coalition goes into one basket — Bola Tinubu’s re-election basket.
Critics who say the coalition weakens APC misunderstand Tinubu. Asiwaju has never been a party man in the narrow sense. He is a movement builder. He is bigger than APC, and he knows APC alone cannot give him 15 million votes in 2027. He needs soldiers like Wike to go where APC cannot enter.
The Infantry Commander Who Delivers for His President
Wike’s recent boast — “You don’t need to be a governor before you’ll be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry” — is often misinterpreted. He was not boasting against Tinubu. He was making a promise to Tinubu.
“I owe the President to give these two as far as the election is concerned,” he said, referring to Rivers and the FCT.
This is the language of a loyal lieutenant reporting to his principal. Wike is telling Nigerians: My structure in Rivers, my new structure in Abuja, all of it is at the disposal of my President.
Who else can make that promise? Which APC governor can confidently say they will deliver Rivers State, a state the APC has never won in a presidential election? Which one can promise to flip the FCT, which gave Tinubu less than 20% in 2023? Only Wike can, and he does so not for his own glory, but as his contribution to his master’s second term.
In the FCT, Wike’s excellent performance — building roads, restoring order, lighting up the city — is not Wike campaigning for himself. It is Wike delivering on Tinubu’s Renewed Hope promise. The unease among some APC governors about Wike’s role actually confirms Tinubu’s dominance.

The PDP itself acknowledged this when it said: “No political party will not wish to have Nyesom Wike in their fold.” If the opposition admires the weapon, how much more should the ruling party celebrate the man who now controls that weapon?
President Tinubu controls it. He is the only politician in Nigeria today who can summon both an APC governor in the North-West and a PDP warlord in the South-South to the same strategy table and have them both answer “Yes, Sir.”
