Referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias has reportedly been removed from officiating duties for at least the next two LaLiga matchdays following his controversial performance in Sunday’s Madrid derby between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.

The decision comes after widespread criticism of several key calls during Atlético’s 2-1 victory, including incidents involving Atlético players Cristian Romero and Kang-in Lee, as well as the eventual red card shown to Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen.

The reported punishment means Ortiz Arias will be left out of the next two rounds of LaLiga appointments, with his return date yet to be confirmed.

The Madrid derby continues to generate controversy beyond the final whistle.
