Six children have been rescued while one person remains missing following flooding triggered by heavy rainfall around Ring Road, Agu Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning as torrential rainfall caused floodwaters to overwhelm sections of the area, disrupting movement and creating an emergency situation for residents and commuters.
According to officials at the scene, emergency responders from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were deployed to coordinate rescue and response operations.
The six rescued children have been taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical attention.
However, search and rescue operations are continuing for the person reported missing.
Videos circulating from the scene showed severe flooding around Ring Road, with reports of students being trapped inside a school bus. Another scene reportedly showed a woman holding onto a tree after being swept into a flooded area.
Officials of Awka South Local Government Area said the immediate situation had been brought under control, while emergency responders continued assessing the affected areas and working to prevent further loss of lives.
The incident comes amid a recent flood-risk warning from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which identified Anambra among states at risk of riverine flooding between September 19 and 25.
Within Anambra, the advisory identified Awka South, Awka North, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ogbaru, Aguata, Anaocha and Ayamelum among areas vulnerable to flooding.
NEMA had earlier urged residents in riverine and flood prone communities to remain vigilant and be prepared to move to safer, higher ground as water levels rise.
Authorities have continued to urge residents to exercise caution during heavy rainfall and to promptly respond to evacuation advisories in flood-prone communities.
