Residents of Ifite-Awka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State have appealed for urgent government intervention following severe flooding and gully erosion that have affected movement within the community.
Heavy rainfall in the area has reportedly worsened the erosion, leaving a deep gully across part of the road and making movement increasingly difficult for residents and other road users.
Some residents said the situation has also placed homes and properties at risk, with some reportedly forced to leave their houses because of the worsening condition of the area
One resident whose property was affected said the damaged road has disrupted her children’s education, adding that they can no longer go to school because the gully has made the route difficult to access.
Residents are therefore calling on the Anambra State Government and relevant agencies to urgently assess the area and provide a lasting solution before the erosion causes further damage.
The development has also raised concerns about access to businesses, homes and other essential services within the community.
Residents say the situation goes beyond a damaged road, as prolonged erosion and flooding can affect livelihoods, education, transportation and the safety of households in the affected area.
They are appealing for immediate intervention to restore access and prevent further expansion of the gully.
