The Benin Writers Society is set to bring writers, poets, storytellers, readers and lovers of literature together in Benin City for a special Independencethemed literary gathering.
Tagged “Poetry Playground for Independence”, the event will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. at City Café, No. 10 Enadeghe Street, Off Boundary Road, GRA, Benin City.
Themed “One Nation, Many Voices,” the gathering is designed to provide a platform for participants to share poetry, stories and ideas while reflecting on Nigeria’s journey and celebrating the country through literature and spoken expression.
A short talk titled “The Role of Words in Building a United and Stronger Nigeria” will also form part of the programme.
In a statement issued in Benin City, the President of the Benin Writers Society, Douglas Ogbankwa, Esq., described the event as an opportunity to use the power of words and storytelling to highlight the greatness and positive attributes of Nigeria.
According to him, the gathering is intended to encourage Nigerians to tell their stories, appreciate their shared identity and celebrate the country through the diverse voices of its people.
The society noted that although storytelling has evolved from traditional gatherings around fires and in community courtyards to books, microphones, stages and social media, its fundamental purpose remains the same preserving experiences, expressing ideas and giving people a voice.
The organisers are inviting members of the public to attend the event, whether to perform a poem, share a story or simply listen and participate in the celebration of Nigerian literature and culture.
The Benin Writers Society, which uses the tagline “Telling Tales for the Next Generation,” said the event would provide an avenue for writers and members of the public to connect through words, creativity and shared national experiences.
