The Abia State Police Command says its operatives have recovered 28 human skulls and other human bones during a raid on suspected criminal camps in the forests of Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.

The remains were reportedly discovered during intelligence-led operations conducted on Sunday as part of ongoing efforts by the command to dismantle suspected criminal hideouts across the state.

The operation involved tactical personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and the Isuochi Police Headquarters.

According to the police, the occupants of the camps fled upon the arrival of the operatives, leaving the locations deserted.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, said the tactical teams subsequently searched the abandoned camps and discovered the human remains.

She said a total of 28 human skulls and other bones were recovered, adding that the police suspect some of the remains could belong to victims of kidnapping.

The command said some of the remains were already decomposed, while investigations are ongoing to establish their identities and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

No arrest has been reported in connection with the operation, as the suspected occupants allegedly escaped before the arrival of the security operatives.

The police said surveillance and monitoring of the area had been intensified, while efforts were ongoing to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
