Minister of Works, David Umahi, has urged the people of Ebonyi State not to vote for Peter Obi, challenging the former Anambra State governor to name an Ebonyi indigene he appointed while he was in office.
Umahi made the call in a video currently trending online, where he questioned what he described as the political expectation that Ebonyi people should automatically align with other South-East states during elections.
The minister argued that Ebonyi people have the right to make independent political decisions based on what they believe is in the best interest of the state.
Umahi said he was particularly unhappy with what he described as insults directed at Ebonyi people whenever they express their decision not to support Obi politically.
“It’s only when it comes to votes that they say we Ebonyi people are one with other states in the South East. But when it comes to insulting us, they insult us. Because we say we won’t vote for him and we tell our people not to vote for him, you’re insulting us? We’re not second-class citizens in Igbo land. We have a right to decide what will be good for our people,” he said.
The minister also challenged Obi to identify at least one person from Ebonyi State whom he appointed during his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State.
The comment comes as political debates in the South-East continue over voting patterns, regional solidarity and the political choices of individual states ahead of future elections.
