Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered an immediate ceasefire and restoration of peace following renewed communal violence between Amaeze Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area.

The clash, linked to a longstanding dispute between the neighbouring communities, reportedly resulted in loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property. Police had earlier confirmed casualties and deployed personnel to the affected areas to restore calm.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, Governor Soludo expressed sadness over the casualties and urged residents of both communities to immediately stop all hostilities.

The governor said violence, bloodshed and destruction of property had no place in Anambra State, urging the communities to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue in resolving their differences.

To address the underlying issues, Soludo has convened an emergency peace and security meeting with key stakeholders from the affected communities for Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the Light House in Awka.

The governor directed that all grievances, claims and presentations concerning the dispute be channelled through designated representatives of the communities at the meeting.

He also ordered the full deployment of security agencies, including the Police, to the affected areas to enforce law and order, protect lives and property, and prevent further escalation.

The renewed violence has reportedly led to the burning of houses, shops and other properties, while the state government has also ordered the closure of Otuocha Company Market following the crisis.

Governor Soludo reassured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property and pursuing a peaceful and lasting resolution to communal disputes across the state.
