Lagos, Kano and Kaduna have emerged as the three states with the highest numbers of registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures in Abuja on Tuesday, as preparations intensify for the 2027 polls.

According to the figures released by the electoral commission, Lagos leads with 7,488,633 registered voters, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640.

Katsina occupies the fourth position with 3,876,051 registered voters, while Rivers has 3,736,434.

Oyo follows with 3,588,111 voters, while Delta has 3,525,988. Benue recorded 3,057,225 registered voters, followed closely by Ogun with 3,037,981.

Bauchi completes the top 10 with 3,012,547 registered voters.

The latest figures come as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 elections. The commission had earlier said the national voter register had risen to more than 103 million following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise and final biometric cleanup.

Amupitan said the three phases of the registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations, subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System.

He said the development further underscored Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest democracy.

“The national register of voters now stands at 110 million, making Nigeria the largest democracy in Africa,” Amupitan said.

With voter registration figures now a major focus ahead of the 2027 elections, the commission is also scheduled to commence nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards on October 9.
