Moses Ukoh, the husband of the late 40-year-old Mary Ugwoma, tells AYOOLA OLASUPO about his wife’s final moments, the medical treatment she received, the circumstances surrounding her death

Your wife died recently, and one of her relatives has accused you of being responsible for her death. What can you say about what happened?

My wife, Mary Ugwoma, recently died, and I was surprised to see a social media post in which her niece accused me of being responsible for her death.

On September 4, we celebrated our New Year festival. My wife prepared a meal for the family, and we all prayed together. The following day, a Saturday, I left for work at about 5am. After work, I decided to sleep over because it is difficult to get a vehicle on Sundays, and I had to resume work by 6am the next morning.

I spoke with my wife around 7pm that Saturday. She sounded well and was as lively as usual. We could not speak on Sunday because she was preparing the children for church. We have two children, an 11-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl.

Between 10am and 11am on Sunday, after the church service, I received a call from a neighbour and friend who told me that my wife had collapsed. I was told that she returned from church, dropped her bag and went to a shop in front of our house to buy snacks, which she ate with some people. Since I was at the office, I asked which hospital they could take her to, as she had collapsed before.
