The Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, has reportedly confronted individuals dumping refuse into a drainage channel, insisting that the waste be removed immediately to prevent damage to public infrastructure.

Ezeobi’s intervention reportedly occurred while he was returning from church, highlighting the state government’s concerns over indiscriminate waste disposal and its implications for road durability and environmental safety.

The commissioner’s action draws attention to the growing problem of blocked drainage channels, which can disrupt the free flow of stormwater and increase the risk of flooding, erosion and road deterioration.

When refuse and accumulated silt obstruct drainage systems, rainwater can overflow onto roads, weaken pavement foundations and accelerate the formation of potholes. Prolonged exposure to these conditions can result in significant infrastructure damage and costly repairs.

Beyond the immediate environmental consequences, indiscriminate refuse dumping can undermine investments in road construction and maintenance, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and erosion.

Ezeobi’s reported intervention reinforces the importance of public cooperation in protecting infrastructure, stressing that the durability of roads depends not only on sound engineering, quality construction and regular maintenance but also on responsible environmental practices.

Residents are therefore encouraged to dispose of waste properly and avoid using drainage channels as dumping grounds to ensure that waterways remain unobstructed and public infrastructure is preserved.

The incident also highlights the need for sustained public awareness, effective waste management and enforcement of environmental regulations to discourage practices that contribute to flooding and infrastructure damage across Anambra State.
