The Abia State Police Command has commenced its 2026 Basic Intelligence Course as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence-led policing, improve crime prevention and enhance security operations across the state.
The training, which began on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, aligns with the policing vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, focusing on professionalism, intelligence-led operations and community policing.
The programme brought together the Senior Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Security, Commander MacDonald Ubah (Rtd.), senior police officers, and participants drawn from various formations of the Police Command, sister security agencies and local community security outfits.
Speaking at the event, Commander Ubah, who served as Special Guest of Honour, emphasised the importance of intelligence gathering in protecting lives and property and supporting effective security operations.
He urged participants to approach the training with commitment, discipline and dedication, stressing the need to acquire and apply relevant knowledge in addressing security challenges.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, also described intelligence as a critical component of effective policing, crime prevention, successful investigations and operational planning.
According to him, the course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to gather, analyse and utilise intelligence to improve operational effectiveness and enable proactive responses to security threats.
Afolabi urged participants to remain focused, disciplined and professional throughout the training, encouraging them to apply the knowledge acquired in the discharge of their duties.
He also highlighted the importance of cooperation among security agencies and members of the public in identifying emerging threats and responding effectively to security challenges.
The police commissioner noted that collaboration and timely intelligence sharing were important to strengthening security operations and improving public safety.
He further expressed appreciation to Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, for the state government’s continued support for the Police Command and its efforts to improve security across the state.
The Basic Intelligence Course is expected to strengthen the intelligence-gathering and analytical capabilities of participants while promoting cooperation among security agencies and community security groups.
By improving the ability of security personnel to identify potential threats and respond proactively, the programme aims to support more effective crime prevention and the protection of lives and property throughout Abia State.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote intelligence driven security operations and strengthen the capacity of personnel to respond to evolving security challenges.
