Kimi Antonelli has written his name into Formula One history after securing the 2026 Drivers’ Championship at just 20 years and 68 days old.
The Italian becomes the youngest world champion in the sport’s history, breaking a record that had stood since Sebastian Vettel won his maiden title in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days.
The Mercedes driver sealed the championship following an impressive performance at the Mexico City Grand Prix, where he finished third to secure enough points to put the title beyond the reach of his closest competitors.
Antonelli started the race fourth but delivered a composed performance to claim a place on the podium. Max Verstappen took the chequered flag in first place, while Lewis Hamilton finished second.
The championship victory represents a major breakthrough for Antonelli, who has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 campaign against some of the most experienced names in motorsport.
His success also ends Italy’s 73-year wait for a Formula One world champion, with Alberto Ascari being the country’s last title winner in 1953.
Antonelli’s achievement is particularly remarkable considering his age and the pressure of competing at the highest level of motorsport. He has now become the youngest driver to reach the pinnacle of Formula One.
With four races still remaining in the season, the Mercedes youngster has already done enough to secure the biggest prize in the sport, marking the beginning of what could be a memorable career.
