The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Diewait Ikpechukwu, who reportedly passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness.
Ikpechukwu, who was also a former footballer, reportedly died on Thursday, November 5, 2026, according to a source close to his family. News of his passing emerged on Friday, November 6.
The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, confirmed the development in a tribute shared on Instagram, describing the late actor as another legend who had bowed out.
His death has since attracted attention from colleagues and admirers, many of whom are remembering his contributions to the Nigerian movie industry.
Ikpechukwu spent more than 25 years in Nollywood, becoming familiar to audiences through his appearances in several Nigerian films. His film credits include The August Meeting, Royal Palace (2005), The Guilty (2006), Across the River (2006), Python King (2007) and Ìjé Love (2022).
Beyond acting, Ikpechukwu had a background in football before establishing himself in the entertainment industry. He was also involved in business and reportedly owned a communications company.
He was recognised for his interest in mentoring younger actors, often encouraging upcoming talents to remain committed to their craft, give their best in every role and avoid being exploited in the industry.
His death represents another loss to Nollywood, particularly among the generation of actors whose performances helped shape the Nigerian home-video industry over the years.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding his final moments and funeral arrangements had not been officially released by his family.
