The Delta State Police Command has brought to light the unbelievable act of a 24-year-old woman named Sofia Nkwo, who confessed to killing her one-year-old son.
Nkwo, citing inability to care for her child after the father’s rejection, admitted to the gruesome act, sending shockwaves through the community.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, expressed profound dismay at the heinous deed during a parade of suspects at the police headquarters in Asaba, the state capital.
“On April 28, 2024, a case of infanticide was reported at Oleh Division,” stated CP Olufemi, recounting the tragic events. “A suspect named Sofia Nkwor, 24, from Isoko South LGA, dumped her one-year-and-four-month-old child in a well along the road in Araya community, Isoko South LGA,” The Punch the CP as saying.
The discovery of the abandoned child, floating in the well by children playing nearby, led to Nkwo’s immediate arrest.
She confessed to the crime, revealing that she disposed of her son on April 26, 2024.
The gravity of the situation was underscored by Olufemi’s remarks, emphasizing the seriousness of the security challenges faced by the state, particularly in Ika North-East and Ika South areas.
“We are aware of the security situation in the Ika area of the state,” stated CP Olufemi. “I have deployed personnel and directed the Area Commander to move into the area and curb the bushes.”
Acknowledging the collaborative effort needed to tackle such issues effectively, Olufemi highlighted coordination with the Edo State Command, given the area’s status as a boundary between Delta and Edo.
“We are aware of the security situation in the Ika area of the state, and I have deployed personnel and directed Area Commander to move into the area and curb the bushes.
“The command is also working with Edo state Command because you know the area is the boundary between Delta and Edo,” he added.
