Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, openly declared that the Igbo community will not apologize for the deaths of Sir Ahmadu Bello and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa during the 1966 coup.
Dismissing allegations by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) regarding plans for an apology to Fulani groups, Iwuanyanwu emphasized that the Igbo people had no involvement in the coup, labeling accusations unfair and unjust.
Speaking in Owerri, Imo state, last weekend, the elder statesman vehemently asserted Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s stance, saying, “NdiIgbo didn’t kill anybody or leader but the NdiIgbo were killed.”
He clarified that recent discussions in Enugu centered on Igboland’s development and did not include any talks of apologizing to Fulanis.
“I never said anything like that,” Iwuanyanwu affirmed, countering the circulated voice mail alleging such discussions.
He added that the 1966 coup was solely a military affair, distancing the Igbo community from any responsibility for the tragic events.
