An Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade, has launched contempt proceedings against MultiChoice, urging the tribunal to incarcerate the Manager of its Abuja office, Mr. Mohammed Sani, for allegedly flouting a court order regarding tariff hikes.

In a Notice of Consequence of Disobedience to Order of Court filed on May 7, Onifade accused MultiChoice of ignoring a tribunal order restraining tariff increases.

The lawyer highlighted a tribunal order from April 29, which directed MultiChoice to halt tariff hikes until further notice. Despite this, the company raised prices on May 1, according to Onifade.

Onifade emphasized MultiChoice’s history of disregarding court orders and detailed the firm’s purported non-compliance in an affidavit.

During a tribunal session, Onifade pushed for a hearing of his motion on notice, while MultiChoice’s counsel, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), challenged the tribunal’s jurisdiction, seeking an adjournment to respond to the filings.

The tribunal, presided over by Thomas Okosun, granted the adjournment, scheduling the next hearing for May 16.
