Telecom giant MTN has shut down all its stores and service centers across Nigeria following an outcry from subscribers after their lines were barred on Sunday.
A viral video circulating on social media Monday showed a mob destroying a barricade fence outside an MTN office.
The clip showed a large crowd of angry subscribers vandalizing the telecommunications company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State.
The outrage was caused by the network blocking subscribers due to mismatched National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM registrations.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, responded to the circulated video on X.com, stating that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order at the scene. “This should not be the way to go!”
Reacting on Tuesday, MTN announced it would be closing its shops nationwide. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the statement read on X.
