The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, marking a major step towards transforming universities into centres of innovation, enterprise and industrial development.

Speaking at the inauguration on behalf of Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the vision of building a $1 trillion economy through research commercialisation and technology-driven innovation.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, described the project as a vote of confidence in the state’s industrial potential, noting that its proximity to Aba’s manufacturing hub would strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship.

The UniPod, developed through a partnership involving the Federal Government, United Nations Development Programme and Tertiary Education Trust Fund, is designed to connect research with manufacturing, equip students with advanced technological skills and promote enterprise development.

Stakeholders said the initiative is expected to position Nigerian universities as engines of economic growth, innovation and job creation while supporting the country’s industrial transformation.
