Chris Nkwonta, the House of Representatives member for Ukwa East/West, Abia State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nkwonta’s move follows closely on the heels of a report by MUK TV, which highlighted calls from PDP leaders urging him to leave the party.
It would be recalled that Nkwonta was the only federal lawmaker from Abia elected under the PDP banner in the last 2023 general elections.
His defection was formally announced on the House floor during a Wednesday plenary session in Abuja by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Reacting to the switch, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki invoked a section of the constitution, calling for Nkwonta’s seat to be declared vacant.
In response, Speaker Abbas acknowledged the presence of a faction within the PDP, hinting at a possible legal complexity.
