The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday hosted a 12-member delegation from Benin Republic’s Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) on a study tour targeted towards enhancing their electoral systems.

The delegation, led by CENA President Sacca Lafia, included national commissioners, directors, and senior staff, who visited INEC headquarters in Abuja to learn from Nigeria’s extensive electoral experience.

Welcoming the delegation, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu highlighted the significance of the visit, particularly as Benin Republic prepares for its 2026 elections.

“Early last month, we received a letter from CENA indicating its interest to undertake a study visit to INEC Nigeria as they prepare for what they described as their most complex election in 2026,” Yakubu remarked.

He outlined key areas of interest for the Beninese officials, which include Nigeria’s legal framework for elections, the design and printing of electoral materials, recruitment and training of poll officials, election budgeting, payment to service providers, security, the use of technology, and engagement with electoral stakeholders.

“In response, the Commission has drawn up an elaborate programme for the visit covering all aspects of the electoral process. Various Departments within the Commission are scheduled to brief the visitors. Peer learning and support will help to strengthen processes. I want to assure CENA that we will fully share our experience with you and make available relevant documents that will enrich your understanding of our processes,” Yakubu assured.

According to Sacca Lafia, the visit is crucial for adopting best practices to improve Benin’s electoral framework.
