Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been sidelined from all team activities, his club Santos confirmed in a statement released Sunday.

The 33-year-old forward reportedly began exhibiting symptoms of the virus on Thursday, prompting immediate medical testing. According to Santos’ official statement:

“With a viral condition that began on Thursday (June 5), Neymar Jr. underwent laboratory tests after evaluation by the Medical Department of Santos FC, which confirmed infection by Covid-19.”

The club added that Neymar has been absent from all club-related activities since the onset of symptoms and is currently recuperating at home under medical supervision and symptomatic treatment.

Though the duration of his absence remains unclear, Neymar had already been ruled out of Santos’ upcoming league match against Fortaleza due to a prior suspension. The match is the final fixture before the Brazilian league halts for the Club World Cup in the United States, scheduled from June 14 to July 13.

Neymar’s return to Santos earlier this season has been marred by injuries, with the former Barcelona and PSG star making just 12 appearances and scoring three goals with three assists.

His contract with the club expires on June 30, and uncertainty looms over whether he will extend his stay.
